Frequently Asked Questions

Fill out this questionnaire which will allow us to answer the question. It’s easy, short and free.

But in case you are impatient: As you have probably heard, if you are of Jewish descent and from one of the following countries/regions usually the answer is yes, you are Portuguese:

North Africa, Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, Bulgaria, Greece, Balkans and South America.

A European passport offers many benefits. You can check them here.

The length of the procedure varies depending on the workload and the situation of the officials. If you have already applied for citizenship and received an access code, you can check here their current estimated time on the Portuguese Ministry of Justice’s website.

As of September 2020, the Portuguese themselves estimated the waiting time up to 29 months from the moment of submitting a perfect application to the government! They also promise not to look at the case in the first year of filing.

If we add the time to process the documents and handle them in Israel and the Jewish community, we will reach at least 3 years of waiting!

If you are in a hurry, you should find another solution, see the following question…

Your minor children’s requests will only take 4 months.

Yes, there is something to do until then.

We can find out and offer you a package of personal tailor-made visas that will allow you to move to Portugal tomorrow, or perhaps to any other country in the union. You will wait for the coveted passport there, under your vine on the farm and with a Pastel de Nata in the oven!

Yes, this is possible for children who are minors, whose parents (father or mother) became naturalized Portuguese after their birth, regardless of their age.

On the other hand, minor children that were born before naturalization will have to wait for one of their parents to obtain citizenship. Only afterwards will they be able to apply for citizenship, which must be done in another way, as the Luso-Jewish section of the law only applies to adults.

To this end, minors will have to prove their connection to Portugal, by starting to learn the language, for instance! But don’t worry, we can help with that too.

Once your children have a Portuguese passport, your spouse will also be able to issue it, if you two have been married for more than 3 years and without proving connection to Portugal (which means that your children will provide a discount on the requirements of the other parent). But it is normal that it takes many years!

For example: let’s suppose your child was born before the father became a citizen.

It will take three years for the father to obtain a passport, another six months for the child and then another three years for the mother, a total of approximately six and a half years before the whole family has passports!

If you are in a hurry it is possible to find a different European passport for the other parent, which can be issued at the same time. Contact us at imapolania.com to find out more about it.

No! After the citizenship is confirmed by the Portuguese government the birth certificate can be obtained by mail and even online.

Yes! The Portuguese birth certificate that will arrive at your home and which you can also print from a website, is a proof of your Portuguese citizenship.

We can help with the exhaustive process of leaving the country and applying for your certificates there.

At the present moment you have to take a PCR test up to 72 hours before your flight to Portugal, or an antigen test up to 24 hours before your flight, unless you are fully vaccinated. In this case, all you have to do is bring your certificate of vaccination. Children under the age of 12 are not required to present a PCR test result.

As a citizen you can immediately move to any of the 27 EU countries and a few others too (Switzerland and Norway, for example). You can also convert your driver’s license to Portuguese, a license in which you can drive without restrictions as a resident in 22 European countries.

You can also open an account with a bank in Portugal (if you are visiting or living there) or in an online bank of your choice, without ever leaving your home. When you are an EU citizen, many doors open, even during quarantine!
